Preferred candidates Foreign persons who intend to conduct research on special matters at the Graduate School of Engineering under a supervising professor of the graduate school. 
After admission as a graduate research student, applicants through Japanese Embassy must take entrance examination for degree courses if they want.
Additional Requirements from the course you are applying for. The MEXT Embassy recommendation applicants do not need to send the application documents by post.

The number of students accepted into the Kenkyusei program at the Dept.
of Architecture is generally one per faculty member.

DOCUMENTS TO PREPARE AND SUBMIT

You need to prepare two types of application documents:
a) General Documents to be Submitted Online
b) Additional Requirements from the course you are applying for (to be submitted online);

This list shows some formatted application documents which you need to upload on T-cens. Please confirm materials to be sent by registered express mail (e.g., printed versions of some online forms, transcripts, degree certificate, etc.) from the Submission Checklist, which you can download by clicking the icon below.

a) General Documents
Photo Headshot photo:Frame the subject showing an aplicant's full face, frontal view, with eyes open.
A color photo is preferable.
The background must be solid and no shadow.

Taken within the last six (6) months prior to T-cens application
The file size must be no more than 500 kB.
Passport A photocopy of your valid passport (most preferable), census register, or other proof of citizenship.
Identification card with your photo is preferable.

Please describe an outline of your research proposal, including your motivation for selecting this particular professor.

If the original certificates are not available or are only issued once officially, you may submit copies that are certified by the issuing organization or your current school as “certified true copy.”
expected_graduation_English If you are an on-going student and do not hold a relevant degree at the time of application to the Graduate School of Engineering, you can submit one of the following documents as a substitute for your degree certificate.

All these documents must be the original and are issued by your university/institute.
Certificate of Expected Graduation
Certificate of Enrolment
Provisional Degree Certificate

In this case, please remind that;
1) you must provide the date that your bachelor's/ master's degree is expected to be conferred (month/year) at Form2 under the Applying tab, and
2) your certificate of graduation, degree certificate, and complete academic transcripts must be submitted during the enrolment process to the University of Tokyo.
b) Additional Requirements from the course you are applying for.
MEXT_passing_certificate_of_the_primary_selection Upload a copy of the document with stamp(s) by the Japanese diplomatic mission.

Only the applicants who have passed the First Screening are eligible to contact the Office of International Students (OIS) at the UTokyo's Graduate School of Engineering with the First Screening result notification.

portfolio.

[Requirements on a digital portfolio]
The file size of the digital portfolio should not be larger than 10MB.
The portfolio must contain the followings:
1) the applicant's full CV
2) the applicant's own design work produced during his/her previous academic program(s) and his/her professional work if available.

In the case of teamwork, his/her role in the project(s) must be clearly indicated.
