Luggage Preparation
Please refer to the helpful instructions below for advice on what to bring and what not to bring on your journey. Please do not arrange to send your belongings to Japan unless you are able to receive them yourself when they arrive; nobody else can receive your shipment in Japan even at a dormitory or laboratory if you are not present in Japan.
Managing your Luggage: Recommendations
Please be mindful of the regulations applied by each airline and airport that you will use on your journey, and follow their directions. It is your responsibility to check the regulations prior to your departure. Security Guide at New Tokyo International Airport (Narita)
- Any liquids must be put into your checked baggage, not in in-cabin/carry-on baggage. This includes: perfumes, gel/shaving cream, and cosmetics (skin lotion, shampoo, etc.)
- Food (dried, canned, and/or bottled only) must be put into your checked-in baggage, not in carry-on luggage, and should be unopened and properly packed in the manufacturers' original packing.
- For instance: pickles, milk powder, spices, etc. - Dried grains
You may bring a small quantity of food items for the first few days. You will soon find a variety of foodstuffs in the local shops.

If you wear glasses, a spare pair of prescription glasses - Clothes
Please bring a reasonable quantity of items.
You can also easily buy clothes in Tokyo at reasonable prices.

It is prohibited to bring any of the following items into Japan:
- Homemade cooked food, oils, certain sweets, and any kind of meat products, etc.
Airport officials may request to inspect your baggage.
