Once your Student Visa is issued

You must have a valid "STUDENT VISA" in your passport to study at the University of Tokyo.

Application procedures for Non-MEXT candidates

"Certificate of Eligibility (CoE)" is a proof of status, which will allow you to obtain a visa to stay in Japan. CoE is one of required documents to apply for a visa in your home place.

You will need to present CoE to the immigration officer when you arrive in Japan.
Immigration to Japan has recently become stricter. Therefore, you must apply for and receive your Student Visa before you come to Japan. Accordingly, please do not leave your country until you have received your CoE (which is the document you need for your visa application), applied for your visa, and received it in your passport.
The Immigration Office have warned us that if you come to Japan prematurely and try to change your visa status after arriving here in Japan, the Immigration Office might send you back to your home country to apply for your visa. Therefore, please do not plan your trip until you actually have your Student Visa in your passport in your own country.

Entry Procedures ＜Visa / Certificate of Eligibility＞

Degree students need to have approximately JPY150,000 per month in total for living expenses.

Average Living expenses for international students residing in Japan in the past is JPY136,000 per month. Accordingly, we recommend that EAP students have JPY150, 000 per month for living expenses.

Important Note	You will also need to present the Certificate of Eligibility to the immigration officer when you arrive in Japan. The Certificate of Eligibility will expire unless you enter Japan within three (3) months from the date of issue.

Download the application form for a Certificate of Eligibility (CoE) and an example of a CoE from T-cens. Upload your completed CoE application form onto T-cens. Important note for Chinese and Korean nationals When filling in the CoE form, #1-Nationality should be written in English. #3-Name, #5-Place of birth, and #8-Home town/city should be written in both Chinese characters and English letters.

Upload all necessary documents certifying your ability to financially support yourself while studying in Japan onto T-cens.

If you have additional files than requested, you can upload them in the spaces from file1.pdf to file3.pdf. You can select whichever spaces to upload to depending upon the extension of your file.

Method of support to pay for expenses while in Japan

There are three primary potential funding sources.
You can select multiple ways to support yourself.
At the time of CoE application, you can change your financial plan you mentioned at STEP1 on T-cens.

Financial Supporting documents for CoE Application

Depending upon the method of support to pay for expenses while in Japan, the financial supporting documents vary.
You must present adequate financial supporting documents which prove that you have the amounts declared on your CoE application.

Basic Requirements on CoE Documentation

All documents must be issued within 6 months prior to your arrival in Tokyo, Japan
For example:
April 2024 entrance: the date on the document must be on or after November 1^st, 2023
October 2024 entrance: the date on the document must be on or after May 1^st, 2023
All documents must be written or translated into English.
*If you cannot get an English document, you need to submit the one issued in the original language accompanied by an English translation except for documents written in Japanese. English translation can be done by yourself.

Documents submitted to the Tokyo Immigration Office in connection with the application procedures will not be returned under any circumstances.

Additional Requirements on CoE Documentation

Supporter's bank statement	The certified bank statement must show the actual amount your supporter has in his/her saving account under his/her name in English. 【VERY IMPORTANT】 Your supporter's name must clearly state. The balance must be equivalent to at least JPY150,000 for each month of study in Japan. The certificate must be written on the bank's letter-headed paper, with an official stamp of the bank. Supporter's Employment Certificate	No fixed format
Certificate of Family Relations	This document certifies the relationship between you and your supporter (family). All applicants except Chinze citizen should submit this. (No fixed format)
The original copy of an official "Notarial Certificate of Relationship 公証書　issued at 公証処" (Only applies to Chinese citizens excluding Taiwanese)	The original copy of an official "Notarial Certificate of Relationship" issued by the government must be submitted to your ICT Admisions Desk. 3. ICT Admissions Desk -> Non-MEXT students (EAP students can skip this section.)
Your ICT Admissions Desk will thoroughly review the CoE application documents that you submitted online, and send you further instructions by e-mail. You may need to revise your online application. Please do not post your application documents until you receive the final go-ahead from your ICT Admissions Desk.

4. Non-MEXT students: Working with T-cens
When you receive the final go-ahead from your ICT Admissions desk, post all necessary documents to them. (N/A for CVL-DPT) One portrait photograph (4 cm × 3 cm) Documents to be prepared for visa application. Make one copy of each financial document respectively for your own reference.

After receiving your documents, your ICT Admissions desk will apply for your CoE at the Tokyo Immigration Bureau. It is likely to take approximately five (5) to seven (7) weeks for your CoE to be issued.

Upon receiving your CoE from the Tokyo Immigration Bureau, your ICT Admissions desk will send its copy (PDF) to you. As soon as you receive the copy of your CoE (PDF) , you must apply for your visa at the nearest Embassy or Consulate of Japan in your home country. You must have the following for your visa application: PDF of "Certificate of Eligibility (CoE)" PDF of "Certificate of Admission" from the University of Tokyo A valid passport Financial documentation (just in case) A portrait photograph (4 cm × 3 cm)

6. ICT Admissions desk -> Non-MEXT students

For October-entry students: Between the end of August and the middle of September
For April-entry students: Between the end of February and the middle of March

Upon receiving your CoE from the Tokyo Immigration Bureau, your ICT Admissions desk will send its copy (PDF) to you.

As soon as you receive the copy of your CoE (PDF) , you must apply for your visa at the nearest Embassy or Consulate of Japan in your home country.

You must have the following for your visa application:

PDF of "Certificate of Admission" from the University of Tokyo
A valid passport
Financial documentation (just in case)
A portrait photograph (4 cm × 3 cm)

Please notify your ICT Admissions desk through the T-cens system. --> [Online] Please update your status on the Admitted page/STEP4. You will also need to present the PDF of your Certificate of Eligibility to the immigration officer when you arrive in Japan. The Certificate of Eligibility will expire unless you enter Japan within three months from the date of issue. Then visit your ICT Admissions Desk in person to notify your arrival in Tokyo.

7. Non-MEXT students

Please notify your ICT Admissions desk through the T-cens system.
