English Language Proficiency


Each Course has it own policy on English Language Proficiency test scores.

Please confirm each course's policy on English Language test scores through the Course Summary.

You should ensure you have ample time to prepare your English Language proficiency scores or a certificate.


1. General policy at the Graduate School of Engineering

2. Minimum Test Score Required for TOEFL or IELTS

There is no minimum score required by the School of Engineering.

    Each department judges its applicants comprehensively considering the research topics and academic areas. Please note that English is the common language at the School of Engineering especially for your research, laboratory work, and thesis writing. It is preferable to have sufficient English language proficiency for smooth communication on campus. The School of Engineering recommends, even though we do not have any minimum score required for applicants, that you keep learning English throughout the application process in order to prepare for your prospective future life at the University of Tokyo.

Q1. I am planning to take another TOEFL test. Can I send the new one after the deadline?

    A1. You should fill in your present TOEFL test scores which you have and arrange sending it from ETS. If you will take another test, you can send its ETS scores sheet to us. Your ICT Admissions Desk will hand both ETS score sheets to the course's faculty members for consideration, ONLY IF your another score will reach us BEFORE the TOELF submission deadline.

2. TOEFL or IELTS Waiver

Q2.English is my native language. Do I still have to submit the standardized English exam scores such as TOEFL?
Q3. I took US nationality at the age of seven and now have a US passport. I am NOT a native English speaker, but I received my entire education in English. Do I still have to submit the standardized English exam scores such as TOEFL?

A2&3. We will check your academic background thorugh the following documents..

    1. Upload following documents onto T-cens.
    2. Then, consult your ICT Admissions Desk before completing you T-cens online application.
    passport Upload your proof of citizenship, such as a copy of your valid passport (for countries such as the U.K., Ireland, USA, Canada(except French Canadians), Australia, and New Zealand)
    evidence of attendance at an English-medium university Upload an evidence of attendance at an English-medium university such as an academic transcript (such as in Canada) as English_language_proficiency.pdf.

  • Go to the Curriculum Vitae page and work on it. Curriculum Vitae page
  • Prepare your T-cens Enquiries on Educational and Occupational Background (hereafter known as AF4_AFEB.pdf form (AFEB-1, AFEB-2, AFEB-3).
  • Upload it on T-cens as AF4_AFEB.pdf.
  • your photo Upload your photo on T-cens. Please refer to Application Process for requirements on photograph.

Q4. I graduated from UCLA, but I am NOT a native English speaker.
Do I still have to submit the standardized English exam scores such as TOEFL?

A4. Those who have been awarded undergraduate or graduate degrees from universities and colleges in the U.K., Ireland, USA, Australia, and New Zealand, or English-medium universities in Canada, please follow the instructions below.

4. Delayed TOEFL or IELTS Test Score Submission

If the test score is not available when filling in the T-cens application form, please fill in the exact date when you will take the examination in the Test Score space at Form 3 under the APPLY page on T-cens.

    To thoroughly and fairly assess your application, it is essential for us to receive all relevant scores before the deadline. If you are not able to submit such scores by then, you will not be considered for entry. Please check the test schedule well in advance and prepare for it.

5. Test Score which is not mentioned in T-cens

Japanese Language Skill

Japanese language skill is not required at the time of application. If you have any certification, such as the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT), you may submit it. However, it is not a necessity.

The School of Engineering and several of its departments offer Japanese language classes for international students to attend free of charge. Please refer to the department website for more details on Japanese language classes.
